How to Care for Plant-Based Leather Bags — Cactus, Olive & Corn Leather Guide

How to Care for Plant-Based Leather Bags — Cactus, Olive & Corn Leather Guide

Plant-based leather bags are easy to care for — but they have different needs than animal leather or plastic-based alternatives. The short answer: clean gently with a soft damp cloth, avoid direct sunlight and harsh chemicals, and store properly between uses. With the right care, your Desserto® cactus leather, Oleatex® olive leather, or corn leather bag will look beautiful for years.

Here is everything you need to know.

Why Plant-Based Leather Care Is Different

Plant-based leathers like Desserto® (made from cactus) and Oleatex® (made from olive industry by-products) are organic, breathable materials. Unlike PU plastic leather, they are not coated in a thick synthetic layer — which means they respond better to gentle cleaning and breathe more naturally. It also means the wrong products can damage them faster than you might expect.

The good news: caring for plant-based leather is simpler than caring for animal leather. No conditioning oils needed. No specialist products required.

How to Care for Desserto® Cactus Leather (Fanny Pack, Tote Green & Black)

Coneli's Fanny Pack and the green and black Tote editions are made from Desserto® cactus leather — grown from the nopal cactus in Mexico without irrigation or harmful chemicals.

Daily care:

  • Wipe down with a soft, dry cloth after use
  • For light marks, use a slightly damp white cotton cloth
  • For stubborn spots: add a small amount of mild soap or gentle shampoo to your cloth, clean the area, then wipe with clean water and pat dry

What to avoid:

  • Alcohol, acetone, bleach or solvent-based cleaners
  • Tanning oils, sunscreen or perfume directly on the leather
  • Abrasive sponges or brushes
  • Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight

Storage:

  • Store in a cool, dry place — ideally in a dust bag
  • Stuff lightly with tissue to help the bag keep its shape
  • Never store in direct sunlight or in a damp cupboard

Stain emergencies:
Act fast. If coffee, wine or a liquid with colour touches the bag, blot immediately with a white cotton cloth and mild soapy water. Do not rub — always blot gently.

How to Care for Oleatex® Olive Leather (Wallet, Bucket Bag)

Coneli's Wallet and Bucket Bag are made from Oleatex® — a material crafted from by-products of the olive oil industry in the Mediterranean. It has a soft, refined texture with excellent water resistance.

Daily care:

  • Wipe down with a soft dry cloth
  • For marks: use a barely damp cloth with no product
  • For deeper cleaning: a small amount of mild, pH-neutral soap on a soft white cloth works well

What to avoid:

  • Oil-based products — olive oil, coconut oil or any conditioning oils will oversaturate the material
  • Strong chemical cleaners
  • Machine washing or soaking in water

Storage:

  • Keep in a breathable dust bag away from heat and humidity
  • Avoid plastic bags for long-term storage, which can trap moisture

How to Care for Corn Leather (Tote Camel Edition)

The Coneli Tote in camel is crafted from corn leather — made from non-food grade corn, free from harsh solvents, with up to 70% plant-based content.

Daily care:

  • Wipe with a soft dry cloth after each use
  • For stains: mild soap on a damp cloth, then wipe clean

What to avoid:

  • Alcohol-based products or bleach
  • Extended exposure to rain — while water resistant, corn leather should not be soaked
  • Sharp objects and rough surfaces

Storage:

  • Store upright in a cool, dry space
  • Stuff with tissue or a small pillow insert to maintain the tote's structure

General Rules for All Coneli Bags

Regardless of material, these rules apply to every Coneli piece:

  • Clean regularly, not rarely — small, frequent wipe-downs prevent build-up and staining
  • Act fast on spills — the sooner you clean, the better the result
  • Never use solvent-based products — no alcohol, acetone, bleach, or aggressive cleaners
  • Store mindfully — cool, dry, away from direct sunlight and heat
  • Use a dust bag — all Coneli bags come with a dust bag; use it

How Long Will a Plant-Based Leather Bag Last?

With proper care, plant-based leather bags can last five years or more with regular use. The key factors are: how often you clean them, how you store them, and whether you avoid the chemicals and conditions that degrade the material.

Coneli bags are designed to be timeless — not just in style, but in longevity. That is why we chose certified materials with a proven track record, and why we build every bag to be used, loved, and kept.
