What Is Cactus Leather? The Plant-Based Material Changing Fashion Forever

By Coneli | Sustainable Elegance

There is something quietly radical about a handbag made from a cactus.

Not in a loud, activist way — but in the way that the best ideas always feel: obvious in retrospect, elegant in execution, and rooted in something real. Cactus leather is one of those ideas. And if you have not heard of it yet, you are about to understand why it matters — not just for fashion, but for the future we are all trying to build for the next generation.

What Exactly Is Cactus Leather?

Cactus leather is a plant-based material made from the nopal cactus — also known as prickly pear — that is harvested, processed, and transformed into a soft, flexible, and durable alternative to animal leather.

The most well-known cactus leather on the market today is Desserto®, developed by two Mexican entrepreneurs, Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez, who spent years searching for a material that could match the quality of traditional leather without the environmental cost. What they created is now USDA Certified Biobased, with a minimum of 65% plant-based content — meaning the majority of every piece comes directly from nature.

At Coneli, we use Desserto® cactus leather for our Fanny Pack collection and our limited-edition cactus leather Totes (the green and black editions). It is the material we fell in love with first — and for good reason.

How Is Cactus Leather Made?

The production process is as thoughtful as the material itself:

1. Harvesting the mature leaves

Only mature nopal leaves are cut — the plant itself is never uprooted. This means the cactus continues to grow, regenerate, and absorb CO₂ year after year. The plantation in Zacatecas, Mexico absorbs an estimated 8,100 tonnes of CO₂ per year.

2. Drying in the sun

The harvested leaves are dried naturally under the Mexican sun for three days — no energy-intensive industrial drying required.

3. Processing into material

The dried cactus is processed into a bio-resin, which is then combined with a partially biodegradable backing to create the final material. The result is soft, smooth, and remarkably similar in feel to premium animal leather — without any of the toxins, chromium, or cruelty involved in conventional tanning.

4. Zero irrigation. Zero toxic chemicals.

The nopal cactus grows naturally in arid regions, requiring no additional water beyond rainfall. This is a significant contrast to animal leather, which carries a heavy water footprint at every stage of production.

Cactus Leather vs Animal Leather — What Is the Difference?

This is the question we get asked most often, and we believe in answering it honestly.

Cactus Leather Animal Leather
Source Nopal cactus plant Animal hide
Water use Minimal — grows on rainfall Extremely high
Chemical processing Low — no toxic tanning agents High — chromium tanning standard
CO₂ impact Carbon-absorbing plantation Significant emissions
Cruelty 100% vegan Animal by-product
Durability High — soft, flexible, long-lasting High
Feel Soft, smooth, luxurious Soft, smooth, luxurious

The honest answer is: cactus leather matches animal leather in the ways that matter for quality — the feel, the flexibility, the durability — and outperforms it in every way that matters for the planet.

Is Cactus Leather Durable?

Yes. This is perhaps the biggest misconception about plant-based materials — that choosing sustainability means compromising on quality. It does not.

Desserto® cactus leather is designed to be soft, flexible, and long-lasting. Our Fanny Packs have been worn daily by customers as crossbodies, clutches, shoulder bags, and belt bags — through commutes, school runs, travel, and everything in between. The material holds its shape, its colour, and its structure beautifully.

To keep your cactus leather bag looking its best:

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and heat
  • Keep away from water, grease, perfumes, and cosmetics where possible
  • If it gets wet, clean gently with a mild, shampoo-type solution and a dry white cotton cloth
  • Store in its protective dust bag when not in use

Why Coneli Chose Cactus Leather

When I moved my family from Berlin to Portugal, I was looking for a slower, more intentional way of living. I wanted to create something that reflected those values — something beautiful, responsible, and built to last.

I looked at traditional leather and saw a material I loved aesthetically, but could not stand behind ethically or environmentally. The water use, the emissions, the production practices — it felt like fashion’s worst-kept secret.

Cactus leather felt like an answer. Not a compromise — an answer. A material that is as elegant as it is honest. That you can carry with pride knowing exactly where it came from, how it was made, and who made it.

Every Coneli bag is handcrafted in Porto by a family-run atelier where artisanship has been passed down through generations. The hardware is made in Lisbon. We know every step of our supply chain — because we believe you deserve to know too.

The Future of Plant-Based Leather

Cactus leather is just the beginning. At Coneli, we see each collection as an opportunity to introduce our community to the most innovative plant-based materials in the world — from corn leather to olive leather, and beyond. Every material we choose carries at least 65% plant-based content, is USDA Certified Biobased, and is chosen for its sustainability credentials as much as its beauty.

Fashion is changing. Slowly, but it is changing — and the women who choose differently are part of why.
